  • MAME games unplayable

Hey Joe,

Do ALL your MAME games do this? Maybe try some older ones than those pictured above.

When did it start happening?

A couple possibilities come to mind:

  • Your GPU drivers are out of date
  • The new MAME version and MAME graphics settings are not compatible with your ROMs. See here: https://forums.polycade.com/d/98-mame-roms-not-loading/5
  • Are you running Win7 or Win10? If Win7, this could be an incompatibility with that OS and the new software update.

ninja turtels and altered beast are old games.....

Gotcha - how about the bullet points above?

windows 10 that came stock with the unit, gpu driver is up to date

havent checked the roms but every rom doesnt work

Which version of AGS are you running? We are having trouble reproducing it here, which makes me think it must be a driver, or a MAME version mismatch.

Did you, by any chance, install MAME outside of AGS, or have an existing version of it installed when you installed AGS, or have you made changes to any of the MAME settings/configs?

I never changed my mame settings or control settings. Last night I downloaded a new copy of mame from their website. Before I did that I copied the existing mame folder from polycade emulators. I then copied over the existing files from the polycade emulator to the new mame emulator. I don’t get the white screen now and I think it works. I won’t be able to test it till Monday though.

Glad to hear Joe! Let us know how it's looks on Monday!

Hey guys - how can we change the mame version? Download a new one? What if there is no other version? I have about 10 mames that won’t work now. Other suggestions?

MAME has several "rom sets" that are compatible with different versions of MAME. Probably your rom is incompatible with this version of MAME. You can either change the MAME version (involved, also a diff version of MAME won't be compatible with other AGS features, like upcoming high-score tracking) or use a rom set that is compatible.

The best way to solve your issue is to update your broken ROMs to versions that are compatible with the latest version of mame. This way you will be able to leverage the latest supporting features like leaderboards.

If you can't do that, change the mame version by doing the following:

  1. Rename the current Polycade mame directory to mame_old. C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\polycade\emulators\mame
    to
    C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\polycade\emulators\mame_old`
  2. Download your preferred version of mame.
  3. Place your new mame version in the emulators directory so that you have:
    C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Roaming\polycade\emulators\mame\mame.exe
  4. You may want to replace your new mame\cfg directory with the one from your mame_old\cfg so that you don't have to remap the controls for the most common mame games.
