MAME Roms won't run

I'm seriously considering purchasing a Polycade but I'm a little worried after testing the AGS on my laptop. Many of the MAME roms that I've found out there don't run on AGS MAME. Not just a few, more than half simply won't run.

I'm pretty sure I'm using the proper roms. Do I need to install an earlier version of MAME? Is that something AGS allows? I'd love to go the Polycade store and buy the ones that don't load, but they're not for sale.

Should I just find another solution?

What happens when you try to launch a ROM that doesn't run? Can you share a sample screenshot?

The base unit includes 3,500 games, which should cover most of what you're looking for.

Beyond those, when adding MAME ROMs you want to be using "merged" ROMs for MAME 0.275 or higher. Usually when a ROM doesn't work it's because it's missing files...you can always find those missing files and add them to the ROM zip to fix the error.
